What do you find most rewarding about being involved in OEW?
The most rewarding thing about OEW is the humbleness it brings me. Helps me stay grounded and appreciate what I have as well as what I have to give back to others. Being able to contribute back to those who gave Americans freedom and rights is just a small portion of my thankfulness for having the strength to do something I never could do.
What does "Community" mean to you when you think of OEW?
Community to me would be the bond/relationship the OCA's share with one another and the rest of the OEW team. Being supportive and sharing in common goals to help make OEW thrive to be the best.
What is your most unforgettable OEW-related memory?
My most memorable/unforgettable memory is actually 2 events. The first was the OCR World Championship at Kings Domain in Ohio. I got the pleasure of running with OEW for the first time helping Norbie Lara. Jesus Banuelos Olvera welcomed me with open arms and I still wear the tank he gave me as a gift. During the course, I managed to jam my ankle really bad. The medics wrapped me
up, and I kept pushing. It was at the top of this extremely steep hill that Norbie turned to me and asked if I was OK. I was in pain, but the race wasn't about me or my pain, so I lied and told Norbie I was good, just there assisting him through the course. When I crossed that finish line, I broke down in tears. So humbled, proud, and honored to be apart of that group and sharing in their experience.
The second was the US OCR Championship in Texas. I was having doubts and not sure if I was wanted by OEW but, Tito took me in that weekend and I had the most fun at this race. Tito gave me his number and kept me in the loop about the weekend events. I ran every race that weekend, keeping up with Tito and the guys, finishing with every honoree, even if that meant going back on course, running it multiple times. It was at this race I shared a bond with Tito that will live with me forever.
What is a motto or principle you live by?
Laughter is the best medicine.
Do you have a military or LEO connection? If so, what is it?
My sister was in the Army.
What piece of advice would you give someone who is interested in becoming a volunteer?
It's worth the experience even if you only do it once.
